The History of the Château des Broyers

The Château was constructed with its current architecture in the early 18th century on the foundations of a hamlet built in 1599 by order of the Carthusians of Mâcon. The first occupants, the Broyer family who gave this place its name, had the task of transforming this then-wooded area into a farm and vineyard, and that’s when the precursor to the current vineyard was born.

There are still traces of various expansions of the vines and the estate over the centuries, until 1710, when Sir Jean Baptiste Poncet, former military officer in the French Marines, had an extra floor added to this house, giving the dwelling the status of Château.

The estate has changed hands many times, for example in 1774 when it was given as a wedding gift to Jean-Baptiste Chevalier, bodyguard to King Louis XV and cavalry captain. In 1823, the Château des Broyers received Burgundy’s highest wine quality classification, ‘Grand Cru de la Bourgogne’.

The most recent changes were made between 2003 and 2006 when the Château took on the form we know to become an events venue specialising in corporate events.
